InuYasha is a Japanese manga series written by Rumiki Takahashi that ran from November 13, 1996 until June 18, 2008 in the Shōnen Sunday. Due to its popularity in the paper, the series was adapted into an anime television series and ran for 167 episodes.
The series deals with a time travelling high school student and a half demon. Together they are seeking shards of the Jewel of Four Souls - a mystical item that allows the possessor great power and a single wish - that have been shattered across Japan. They need to ensure that the power the jewel holds does not fall into the wrong hands, as he or she in possession can become an unbeatable force.
Made for children, this complex series can be a touch heavy on the demonic themes. That said it’s best to get acquainted with the two lead characters before the overload of time travel begins.
Kagome Higurashi
Kagome is a fifteen-year-old girl who is mysteriously transported back in time. She is the reincarnation of Kikyo, a priestess who died fifty years prior in a battle over the Jewel of Four Souls. Due to this connection Kagome has strong spiritual powers and she is able to sense out shards of the jewel.
InuYasha
InuYasha is a half demon dog, with a supernatural sword made from his late father’s fangs. Using the sword he has the ability to kill 100 demons with a single swing. InuYasha has demonic blood that enables him to heal quickly from injury. He is desperate for the Jewel of Four Souls but knows he will be unable to steal it from Kagome when they find all the shards, as Kaede, Kikyo’s sister foresaw these actions and placed him under Kagome’s control via a powerful necklace only she can control.
